What intravenous therapy is

Intravenous therapy is the administration of a substance directly into a vein, through a cannula: the vitamin or medicine is diluted in a bag of saline and drips slowly, under the supervision of medical staff. The route bypasses the digestive tract, so what is in the bag reaches the circulation without depending on intestinal absorption. That is the real difference of the intravenous route — a difference in administration, not a promise about the effect.

In hospital, the IV drip is a routine tool: rehydration, antibiotics, iron. In recent years, “IV therapy” has also come to describe wellness drips with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. At Synerva we do both, but we keep them separate. Wellness protocols are not a treatment for any disease. Medical administrations — iron for a confirmed deficiency, Cerebrolysin on prescription — are given only on indication. If you are just starting to read up, we have written an IV drip guide, and for vitamins as a medical practice — oral, injectable and IV — see the vitamin therapy page.

What it is not: a shortcut for sleep, diet or exercise, nor a substitute for the treatment prescribed by your doctor.

Who it may suit — and when it is not appropriate

May be suitable

  • If you want an intake of vitamins or antioxidants given by medical staff, after an assessment, as part of a wellness routine.
  • If you do not tolerate oral supplements well or your doctor has recommended parenteral administration.
  • If you have a deficiency confirmed by blood tests, for example of iron, and your doctor has indicated the intravenous route.
  • If you need fluids and electrolytes after exertion or after a hard day, without symptoms that call for emergency care.

Not appropriate, or we postpone

  • High fever, chest pain, shortness of breath or severe dehydration: the place for these is the emergency department, not a wellness drip.
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding: most protocols are not given; this is discussed at the assessment.
  • Kidney or heart conditions, G6PD deficiency (for high-dose vitamin C), known allergies to the components: the doctor decides and may refuse.
  • As a replacement for a current treatment.

Intramuscular injections — these are not drips

We list them here so it is clear what is not part of intravenous therapy: they are given into a muscle, in a few minutes.

Medical conditions for administration — 9 protocols

Some protocols are prescription medicines or require blood tests first. We give them only after a medical assessment, under the conditions below.

Magnesium IV drip

Intravenous magnesium is cleared by the kidneys, and an excess (hypermagnesaemia) is an absolute contraindication to giving more. That is why kidney function is checked at the assessment and the drip is given slowly. Contraindicated in kidney failure, Addison's disease and barbiturate poisoning.

Iron infusion — 500 mg protocol · Iron infusion — 200 mg protocol

Iron infusions are given only at the clinic and only on the basis of blood tests confirming the deficiency (ferritin, serum iron, full blood count, plus C-reactive protein where relevant), after a medical assessment. They are not given on request and are not given at home.

Cerebrolysin infusion — 1 × 10 ml ampoule

Cerebrolysin (a porcine brain protein hydrolysate, 215.2 mg/ml) is a prescription medicine, not a wellness supplement. One 10 ml ampoule contains 2152 mg and is given diluted in 250 ml saline over 45–60 minutes, only at the clinic, with monitoring throughout the infusion. It is given on the basis of a documented neurological diagnosis and after a medical assessment; the dose and length of the course are set by the doctor. Contraindicated in epilepsy/status epilepticus, severe kidney failure and in people allergic to its components — there is a risk of hypersensitivity reactions.

IV support during injectable weight-loss treatment

Given only after a medical assessment confirming that it is suitable and that there are no contraindications. The injectable weight-loss treatment remains solely in the care of the doctor who prescribed it.

Vitamin D 100,000 IU (IM) · Vitamin D 300,000 IU (IM)

High-dose injectable vitamin D is a prescription medicine, not a supplement. It is given after a medical assessment, and the dose and repeat interval are set according to your serum 25-OH vitamin D level — testing beforehand is recommended. Vitamin D is fat-soluble and accumulates: a high dose given without an indication is not risk-free.

Vitamin B12 (IM)

Low vitamin B12 has different causes — from insufficient intake to absorption problems. The injection corrects intake but does not explain the cause of the deficiency, which is investigated separately. Given after a medical assessment, at the clinic or at home.

Gerovital H3 (IM) — 1 × 5 ml ampoule

Gerovital H3 contains procaine hydrochloride, 100 mg in a 5 ml ampoule, and is a prescription medicine, not a supplement. The leaflet requires a procaine sensitivity test before treatment starts: a small amount is first given under the skin, and after 24 hours the test is repeated intramuscularly. A first-time patient cannot receive the injection on the same day. It is given strictly intramuscularly, only at the clinic, with an observation period afterwards. The intravenous route is contraindicated. Also contraindicated in hypersensitivity to procaine, severe low blood pressure, uncontrolled epilepsy, second- or third-degree atrioventricular block without a pacemaker, and alongside sulfonamides or acetylcholinesterase inhibitors. The leaflet provides for a course of three injections a week for four weeks; the schedule is set by the doctor.

Dedicated pages for each therapy

For each substance we have written separately what it is, who it makes sense for, what contraindications it has and what we cannot promise.

How a session works

1. Booking

You tell us your goal, the medication you take and whether you have recent blood tests. For the iron infusion, blood tests are mandatory; for the rest, the doctor decides whether they are needed.

2. The medical assessment

Before administration, we go through your history, allergies, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and kidney, liver and heart conditions. The assessment is included. Sometimes the recommendation is a different protocol — or none.

3. Administration

The nurse inserts a cannula, usually in the forearm, and starts the drip. It lasts from 30 minutes to a few hours, depending on the protocol. The slow rate is intentional, not a formality.

4. After the drip

The cannula is removed, followed by a few minutes of observation — longer for iron. You resume your activities the same day and let us know about any unusual reaction that appears afterwards.

Medical supervision

Synerva protocols are overseen by Dr. Claudiu Ruscu, intensive care physician — anaesthesia and intensive care. It is the specialty that works every day with venous access, IV infusions and the acute reactions that can occur during an administration. This matters less on the day everything goes normally, and a lot on the rare day it does not.

The drip is set up and monitored by medical staff, with sterile, single-use materials. The clinic is equipped for emergencies. For administrations with a higher risk of hypersensitivity, such as iron, monitoring is continuous — blood pressure, oxygen saturation, pulse, ECG — and is followed by an observation period; that is why these are not done at home. The full team is on the medical team page.

What is documented and what is not

Some things are well established. Intravenous iron corrects a confirmed deficiency when oral iron is not tolerated or is not enough; the effect shows in blood tests after a few weeks. Fluids and electrolytes given intravenously rehydrate. Vitamin B12 and vitamin D injections have clear indications when blood tests show a low level.

Others are less certain. In a person without a deficiency, the evidence that a vitamin IV drip increases energy or supports immunity beyond what diet provides is limited. For intravenous NAD+, resveratrol or alpha-lipoic acid, human studies are few and small. On each protocol page we say what the substance is and what is known about it, not what it will do for you. Feeling good after a session may also come from hydration and an hour of rest — and it is fair for you to know that before you pay.

At the clinic or at home

The clinic is at 5 Ciprian Porumbescu Street, Sector 1, Bucharest, open daily from 09 to 20, seven days a week. Most protocols can also be done at home, after the same assessment: travel costs 100 RON in Bucharest (free from 600 RON) and 150 RON in Ilfov (free from 900 RON).

Two exceptions stay at the clinic regardless of address: the iron infusion and Cerebrolysin. The reason is not logistics but the setting: emergency equipment and observation after the drip.

Frequently asked questions

How much does intravenous therapy cost in Bucharest?

At Synerva, IV protocols start from 250 RON and go up to 1250 RON, depending on the substance, dose and duration. The medical assessment is included in the price. For home visits, travel is added: 100 RON in Bucharest (free from 600 RON) and 150 RON in Ilfov (free from 900 RON). The price of each protocol is shown in the grid on this page.

Intravenous therapy, IV infusion or “IV drip” — is it the same thing?

Yes, they are names for the same route of administration: the substance, diluted in saline, drips slowly into a vein. “Therapy” describes the practice, “infusion” describes the procedure. What differs is the composition and indication of each protocol, not the route.

Do I need blood tests beforehand?

For the iron infusion, yes — the deficiency must be confirmed by ferritin, serum iron and a full blood count. For the vitamin D injection, a 25-OH vitamin D test is the recommended step. For wellness protocols, the doctor decides at the assessment, depending on your history.

How long does a session last?

Most protocols take between 30 and 60 minutes of drip time. High-dose NAD+ and iron take longer, with observation afterwards. The duration of each protocol appears in the grid, next to the composition.

Can I have the drip if my veins are hard to find?

In most cases, yes. Tell us when you book. It helps to drink water in the hours beforehand and not to arrive cold. If the cannula cannot be inserted comfortably and safely, we do not persist with repeated needle sticks, and we discuss the right option.

Can intravenous therapy be done at home?

Most protocols, yes, in Bucharest and Ilfov, after the same assessment as at the clinic. The exceptions are the iron infusion and Cerebrolysin, which are given only at the clinic, where there is emergency equipment and an observation period.

Who supervises the administration?

The protocols are overseen by Dr. Claudiu Ruscu, intensive care physician (anaesthesia & intensive care). The drip is set up and monitored by medical staff, with sterile, single-use materials.

Is IV therapy a treatment?

Wellness drips are not a treatment for any disease and do not replace the treatment recommended by your doctor. Medical administrations — for example iron for a confirmed deficiency — are given only on indication, after blood tests and an assessment.

How often can an IV drip be repeated?

There is no rhythm that applies to everyone. The interval is set at the assessment, depending on the protocol, tolerance and, where it matters, blood tests. For iron, repetition is decided by ferritin, not by how you feel.

Informational text, under medical review. Administration takes place only after the doctor's assessment.

Not sure which protocol is right for you?

Tell us your goal and what blood tests you have. The doctor recommends the right protocol at the assessment, which is included in the price.
