Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) IV drip in Bucharest

English translation of content medically reviewed in Romanian by Dr. Claudiu Ruscu, intensive care physician (anaesthesia & intensive care)· Romanian text reviewed 20 September 2026

Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) is an antioxidant that the body produces in small amounts. At Synerva it is not given on its own: it is part of the Anti-inflammatory protocol, an IV drip with MSM and alpha-lipoic acid lasting about 60 minutes, chosen to support recovery after physical strain.

Alpha-lipoic acid has something rare among the substances used in wellness IV drips: serious clinical studies. Except that they are about something other than what we do — and we explain exactly what the difference is.

Medically assessed protocol

Medical assessment before administration (included)
Under the supervision of an intensive care physician (anaesthesia & intensive care)
A personalised protocol, not a one-size-fits-all recipe
Equipped for emergencies

Benefits

Antioxidant

ALA and its reduced form help neutralise free radicals and regenerate other antioxidants, such as vitamins C and E and glutathione.

Mitochondrial cofactor

In the body, lipoic acid is a cofactor for mitochondrial enzymes involved in producing energy.

Support for recovery

The protocol in which we give it is chosen after physical strain, as support within a wellness routine.

Together with MSM

MSM is a sulphur compound, studied mainly by mouth, in relation to joint comfort and recovery after exercise.

Real clinical data — in a different context

Intravenous ALA has clinical studies in diabetic neuropathy. We do not treat neuropathy; we say so so that you know where its reputation comes from.

Medical administration

Medical staff, sterile materials, supervision by an intensive care specialist and equipment for emergencies.

IV drip or oral supplements — when each one fits

It is not “better or worse” — they have different roles. Here is the difference, stated fairly.

What alpha-lipoic acid is

Alpha-lipoic acid, also known as thioctic acid or ALA, is a sulphur-containing molecule that the body produces in the mitochondria, in small amounts. There it works as a cofactor for enzymes involved in turning nutrients into energy. It is also found in food — in organ meats such as liver and kidney, in spinach and broccoli — but again only in small amounts.

What makes it unusual is that it acts both in the watery and in the fatty parts of the cell, and its reduced form can help regenerate other antioxidants, such as vitamins C and E and glutathione. Hence the interest in it as an antioxidant.

At Synerva, in Bucharest, alpha-lipoic acid is not given on its own. It is part of a single protocol: Anti-inflammatory, an IV drip that combines MSM with alpha-lipoic acid, lasting about 60 minutes, after a medical assessment.

IV drip with alpha-lipoic acid and MSM at the Synerva clinic in Bucharest

ALA at Synerva: only in the Anti-inflammatory protocol

If you were looking for an IV drip with alpha-lipoic acid alone, you should know from the start that we do not offer one. The only option available is the Anti-inflammatory protocol, with MSM and alpha-lipoic acid, at 450 RON. You receive the details of the preparation's composition at the assessment.

The name of the protocol describes the purpose it was designed for — supporting recovery after physical strain — and is not a medical promise. The drip does not treat an inflammatory disease, does not replace the treatment prescribed for a diagnosed condition and is not an alternative to the anti-inflammatory medicines recommended by your doctor.

Alpha-lipoic acid: benefits — where the evidence is

The most solid clinical data on alpha-lipoic acid come from one specific area: diabetic polyneuropathy. In studies such as ALADIN and SYDNEY, patients with diabetes and neuropathy received 600 mg of intravenous alpha-lipoic acid a day for about three weeks, and their neuropathic symptoms — pain, burning, numbness — improved compared with placebo. On the basis of these data, thioctic acid is authorised as a medicine for the symptoms of diabetic neuropathy in several European countries.

These results do not automatically carry over to healthy people and do not mean that our drip would have the same effect. The Synerva protocol is a wellness protocol: it does not treat neuropathy and does not replace the treatment set by your diabetes specialist or neurologist. If you have diabetes and symptoms of neuropathy, the right place to go is a specialist consultation.

In other areas — body weight, insulin sensitivity, markers of inflammation or oxidative stress — studies have mostly used oral ALA and shown small or inconsistent effects. We do not present it as a substance that makes you lose weight or that prevents disease.

What “ALA 600” means

“ALA 600” refers to the 600 mg dose of alpha-lipoic acid, the one used in most clinical studies, both intravenously and by mouth. At this dose you will find both supplements and thioctic acid medicines in pharmacies, as tablets or capsules; the injectable forms are medicines used on a doctor's instructions.

The figure on a box says nothing about how suitable the product is for you. And our protocol is not “ALA 600”: alpha-lipoic acid is given together with MSM, and you discuss the exact composition with the doctor at the assessment.

IV drip or alpha-lipoic acid capsules

Oral alpha-lipoic acid is absorbed incompletely, and food reduces absorption — which is why it is usually recommended on an empty stomach, about half an hour before a meal. For a daily, long-term intake, the oral form is the right one, and we say so even though we give the other option.

The drip delivers the substance straight into the bloodstream, in a predictable amount, under medical supervision. It is a one-off session, not a substitute for oral treatment recommended by a doctor.

MSM: the other half of the protocol

MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) is an organic sulphur compound, naturally present in small amounts in some foods. It is best known as an oral supplement, studied in relation to joint comfort and recovery after exercise, in studies that are generally small and short.

For intravenous MSM, the human data are scarce — scarcer than for alpha-lipoic acid. That is why the protocol is given only after a medical assessment, and we do not promise any particular effect. You choose it as support within a recovery routine, not as treatment.

How much the alpha-lipoic acid IV drip costs — price in Bucharest

At Synerva, the Anti-inflammatory protocol, with MSM and alpha-lipoic acid, costs 450 RON per session, with the medical assessment included. There is no ALA-only option and no course at a package price for this protocol.

For home visits a travel fee is added: 100 RON in Bucharest (free from 600 RON) and 150 RON in Ilfov (free from 900 RON). If your goal is more about antioxidant intake, the doctor can also tell you about the glutathione IV drip, from 250 RON.

How a session works

1. The assessment

The doctor discusses your goal, medical history and medication, with particular attention to diabetes, alcohol and ongoing treatments. The assessment is included.

2. Inserting the cannula

A cannula is placed in your forearm or on the back of your hand; all you feel is the needle prick.

3. The drip

The solution runs slowly, for about 60 minutes. Giving alpha-lipoic acid too fast can cause a feeling of heaviness in the head or difficulty breathing, which is why the rate is slow and supervised.

4. After the session

You go back to your usual activities. If you have diabetes, keep an eye on your blood glucose over the following hours, as your doctor has advised.

Alpha-lipoic acid contraindications — who it is not recommended for

The drip is not given if you have a known allergy to alpha-lipoic acid or MSM. Pregnancy and breastfeeding, for which the safety data are insufficient, severe kidney or liver failure and severe active infections are discussed at the assessment and usually mean postponing the drip.

Treated diabetes is the most important situation: alpha-lipoic acid can improve glucose use and lower blood glucose, with a risk of hypoglycaemia in people taking insulin or other diabetes medicines. Rarely, an autoimmune syndrome causing hypoglycaemia has also been described in association with alpha-lipoic acid. Chronic alcohol use, which can deplete vitamin B1 stores, is a precaution explicitly listed for thioctic acid.

Ongoing cancer treatment must always be discussed: alpha-lipoic acid has been reported to reduce the effect of cisplatin. Allergic reactions are rare, but possible. The drip is given in a setting equipped for emergencies, under the supervision of an intensive care specialist. The precautions for all protocols are in the IV drip safety guide.

Who it may make sense for

The Anti-inflammatory protocol may suit healthy adults going through periods of sustained physical effort who want antioxidant support within a recovery routine, given medically, after an assessment.

It is not suitable as a treatment for neuropathy, for diagnosed joint pain or for an inflammatory disease, and it does not replace prescribed medication. If you have diabetes, talk first to the doctor who monitors your treatment. For recovery after exercise, you can also compare the magnesium IV drip or the amino acid IV drip.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an alpha-lipoic acid IV drip cost in Bucharest?

At Synerva, alpha-lipoic acid is given in the Anti-inflammatory protocol, together with MSM, at 450 RON per session, with the medical assessment included. For home visits a travel fee is added: 100 RON in Bucharest and 150 RON in Ilfov.

Can I have the IV drip if my veins are hard to find?

Most of the time, yes — tell us from the start, when you book. It helps a lot to drink water in the hours before and not to arrive cold: in a hydrated, warm body the veins are easier to see and feel. The cannula is usually placed on the forearm or the back of the hand, by medical staff used to finding veins. If it cannot be placed comfortably and safely, we do not keep trying with repeated needle sticks, and we discuss the right option with you.

Can I have an IV drip with alpha-lipoic acid alone?

Not at Synerva. Alpha-lipoic acid is given only in the Anti-inflammatory protocol, combined with MSM.

What does ALA 600 mean?

The 600 mg dose of alpha-lipoic acid, used in most clinical studies and in many pharmacy products. Our protocol is not “ALA 600”; you discuss the exact composition with the doctor at the assessment.

Do you treat diabetic neuropathy with alpha-lipoic acid?

No. There is evidence for intravenous ALA in diabetic neuropathy, but our protocol is a wellness protocol and does not treat neuropathy. For symptoms of neuropathy, see your diabetes specialist or a neurologist.

Can I have the drip if I have diabetes?

Only after the assessment and after you tell us what treatment you take. Alpha-lipoic acid can lower blood glucose, with a risk of hypoglycaemia in people who use insulin or other diabetes medicines.

What are the contraindications of alpha-lipoic acid?

Allergy to the components, pregnancy and breastfeeding, severe kidney or liver failure, severe active infections. Important precautions: treated diabetes, chronic alcohol use and ongoing cancer treatment.

How long does the drip take?

About 60 minutes of slow administration, plus the medical assessment beforehand.

What side effects can it have?

Rarely, allergic reactions. If given too fast, it can cause a feeling of heaviness in the head or difficulty breathing, which is why the rate is slow.

Can it be done at home?

Yes, in Bucharest and Ilfov, after the same assessment. A nurse comes to you with the necessary materials.
