Why intravenous rather than tablets
Oral magnesium works well for most people, and for a baseline intake it is the first choice — we say so even though we offer the other option. It does, however, have a practical limit: intestinal absorption is limited, and the unabsorbed surplus draws water into the gut. That is why high doses have a laxative effect before they replenish your reserves.
The intravenous route bypasses this threshold: the whole dose reaches the bloodstream, predictably. It is the drip's only certain advantage, and it is a real one — but it does not follow that everyone needs it.
Magnesium sulphate ampoules — what you find in the pharmacy
The injectable form available in pharmacies is magnesium sulphate, in ampoules. The leaflet describes it as having antispasmodic, anticonvulsant and sedative action, and intravenous administration is given slowly, in medically determined doses.

Kidney function — why it matters more than for other protocols
Magnesium is cleared by the kidneys. In a person with normal kidney function, an excess is rare, because the body clears it efficiently. In kidney failure, however, magnesium accumulates, and hypermagnesaemia shows up as muscle weakness, low blood pressure, nausea and confusion, and in severe forms as breathing and heart problems.
For this reason the contraindications in the leaflet include kidney failure, Addison's disease and barbiturate poisoning. At the assessment we check kidney function and current medication — including laxatives and antacids that contain magnesium, because they add to the total intake.

Can I have the IV drip if my veins are hard to find?
Most of the time, yes — tell us from the start, when you book. It helps a lot to drink water in the hours before and not to arrive cold: in a hydrated, warm body the veins are easier to see and feel. The cannula is usually placed on the forearm or the back of the hand, by medical staff used to finding veins. If it cannot be placed comfortably and safely, we do not keep trying with repeated needle sticks, and we discuss the right option with you.
How long does the administration take?
40 minutes. The slow rate is not optional: given quickly, magnesium can cause a feeling of warmth, flushing and a drop in blood pressure.
