What a vitamin B12 injection is
Vitamin B12, also called cobalamin, is a water-soluble vitamin with recognised roles in the normal functioning of the nervous system, in the formation of red blood cells and in normal energy metabolism. The body does not make it on its own — it comes exclusively from food or from supplementation.
What sets B12 apart is the way it is absorbed: by mouth, it needs intrinsic factor, a protein produced by the lining of the stomach. When this mechanism is impaired, oral supplements reach the bloodstream only to a limited extent, however high the doses. An injection bypasses this step entirely.
